You have heard it all before, haven’t you?
Exercise is good for you (especially when you have PCOS)!
I am not just talking about working out as if you have Jillian Michaels screaming at you over your head.
Exercise is more about finding ways to get up and moving throughout the day.
Exercise is the key to an overall healthy lifestyle and what separates those of us struggling with weight loss from those thin friends of ours.
We know it is important for healthy living, but why do you hear of fellow cysters who are working out like crazy, but their weight is not going anywhere?
Why should you put in the effort with no results?
Cysters are putting in awesome effort and my hat is off to them for their motivation, but they are struggling so much because they do not have the correct formula for exercising with PCOS.
Enter Laura F.
This is the email I received from her this week:
“I really could use your help, Amber! I started off so excited to get going with my new fit lifestyle. I have been working out 5-6 times per week + I have only lost 2 pounds this past month. I am frustrated + have no idea how long I can keep these tough workouts up when I am not seeing any results. What am I doing wrong?”
Can you relate?
Because of the extent PCOS affects the body, you need more than the “you-should-workout-more” mentality. More is not always better for us Cysters.
Hours on the treadmill is not the answer!
So, what should you be doing?
Over the next few weeks, I am going to walk you through step-by-step how to BEST implement exercise into your own weight loss plan when you have PCOS.
It’s time you STOP struggling + finally see the results you dream about!
Repeat after me, “I am a fit Cyster.”
It is time you start telling yourself this and making it part of your identity. I don’t care how much you feel you are overweight or how unhealthy you feel your body is. It’s time you start thinking of yourself as fit.
When this becomes part of who you feel you are, everything else falls into place.
You are more likely to say yes to activities that get you moving more when you KNOW that is who you are. When you feel down about your body, you are more likely to sit during the day. Let’s start believing that you truly are a FIT CYSTER!
Let me have Ashley help explain.
Ashley is a 1:1 coaching client of mine. She spent hours in the gym each week with ZERO results.
We tried different workouts for her but it wasn’t until she mastered how she viewed her body that she saw results.
She didn’t start seeing results until she changed her thinking from I can’t do this/my body doesn’t respond to exercise to I am a fit woman + because I am a fit woman this is how my days are going to look like.
She started telling herself in the mirror every morning, “I am a fit cyster. My body LOVES to move. How am I going to show myself + others that being FIT is a priority of mine today?”
You know what happened?
An active lifestyle became her norm. She started identifying with those around her who loved to go out and do activities such as hiking, etc. She found new hobbies she never thought she would enjoy that helped her stay physically active.
Her workouts in the gym stayed the same.
You know what else happened?
The number on the scale dropped.
All it took was changing how she felt about herself + her body confidence sky rocketed!
This is about changing your mentality from thinking your weight loss success comes from hard grueling workout sessions to creating a completely fit lifestyle.
The Research Says…
There are hundreds of studies that point to how awesome/critical an active lifestyle is for your overall health and weight loss goals, but listen to this study:
Researchers found that participants who got in more activity throughout the day such as short bouts of activity during TV commercials, raking leaves, or taking stairs had more positive results in lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, metabolic syndrome, and waist circumference than those who were just exercising using a structured exercise program.
Seek out ways you can be active THROUGHOUT the entire day, not just squeezing in workouts.
Staying physically active, is a lifestyle choice.
No amount of grueling workouts will make up for your lack of activity the rest of the day.
By making another fit choice today, you are setting yourself up for a lifestyle of better overall health.
Having PCOS puts us at a great risk of developing so many health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. You know one of the BEST ways to combat these?
Exercise? Sure, it helps. But the true value comes from a fit lifestyle.
I mean look at the evidence…
Staying physically active throughout the day can reduce the risk of:
- Heart Disease
- High blood pressure
- High Cholesterol
- Blood Clotting
- Hormonal imbalance
- And More!
Exercise can do many things for your overall health, and while weight loss is a great goal for your exercise, we should be more interested on the ability to set our bodies up for a lifetime of healthier living.
The healthy lifestyle focuses on making exercise and healthier choices consistently.
This is not something you can choose to start for your New Year’s Resolution and drop by March.
It is something you must make the conscious decision on a daily basis to make the best choices for your body.
“Fitness needs to be perceived as fun and games or we subconsciously avoid it.” –Unknown
Remember, getting more active in your daily life is not about the grueling workouts you see on the Biggest Loser. It’s about finding activities that you enjoy that get your body moving.
The sky is the limit.
So, before we even get to how much cardio, what strength training should look like, etc. we need to look at our overall lifestyle.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I spending more of the day sitting or walking around?
- Do I seek out opportunities to be more active throughout the day?
- Am I trying to use a hard workout session to make up for my lack of activity throughout the day?
- Do I enjoy activities that get me up and moving or activities/hobbies that I sit a lot for?
It is time to start thinking of yourself as a fit cyster. You are an active woman who loves to get moving around + is always looking for opportunities to be more active throughout the day.
Your homework for the week:
- Start recording your activity level throughout the day. What are you up to? How much time do you spend sitting?
- Brainstorm at least 3 activities you could do today that would get you up and moving more.
- Start telling yourself in the mirror every morning that you are a fit cyster!
Leave a comment below + tell me 1 activity that you brainstormed above
Next week we will be diving into the next step to your complete fit lifestyle plan: cardio exercise! Did you know your cardio exercise can be making you GAIN weight? I’ll explain…
